Lupines produce thick, candle-like spires densely packed with pea-shaped flowers in blues, purples, pinks, reds, yellows and bicolours, standing above distinctive fingered leaves that hold raindrops beautifully. Perfect for borders, naturalised plantings, cottage gardens and pollinator beds, they are much loved by bumblebees and, being legumes, they fix nitrogen and improve the soil around them. Lupines are very cold hardy and well suited to northern gardens. Grow in full sun in light, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, and avoid disturbing their deep taproot.
