Lovage is a tall, statuesque perennial with glossy divided leaves and a deep, concentrated celery flavour that is far stronger than celery itself. Perfect for the back of a herb garden, large containers and productive borders, its leaves, stems and seeds season soups, stocks, stews, potato dishes and savoury breads, and the hollow stems make a memorable straw for a tomato drink. Use it sparingly, as the flavour is intense. Lovage is very cold hardy, preferring rich, moist soil in full sun or part shade.
